Is the tactic of switching all 5 defensive players in your game already?
Switching must be done aggressive with clear communication. It is a sound way to play, especially as a defensively change up.
Do you switch all five?

On average 60% of your scoring will come from two players. That means that the rest of the team will provide a much lower FGA and FGM in games.
If so ask yourself this: Do your shooting drills provide the same amount of shots and the same kind of shots for all players......if the first paragraph is true, you are wasting your time. Players should shoot the shots in practice they will shoot in a game......simple, but true!

I've turned a basic wing entry pass from the top into a very difficult task. There are specific rules by the dribbler, and rules for the wing getting open. I'll be posting all of those soon. It took 7 players 50 minutes to be taught and then could execute 2 on 2. The teaching done in progression; individual with no defense, 1 on 1, defense just on wing, defenese just on ball handler, then finally, 2 on 2. Timing seems to be the #1 difficulty along with turnovers. based on my rules, it is difficult to successfully complete the drill on offense. Rules and diagrams coming.........soon.

Ways to Lose Games
Remember while reading this is a list of ways to lose games.
1. Don’t play hard: As a coach this is the only thing you can control. It’s number 1 for a reason. So important
2. Play Smart: Says it all. Just can’t win being stupid.
3. Play Together: The whole is greater then the parts.
4. Have no Transition Defense: Know his number, know his game is the perfect scouting report.
5. Foul Shooting: Know when to foul, know who to foul, do you want to foul with 5 seconds or less at the end of the ball game. Know your philosophy. Foul the player before he gets to the basket instead of as he’s going up for the lay-up.
6. Handle the ball carelessly: Keep turnovers down. Taking bad shots. (also see his shot grading system)
7. Don’t have a delay game: You have to have a good delay game. (he is not a fan of the shot clock)
8. Don’t have a comeback game: Have to have a plan to get back into the game. Full court press of some kind. He gave an example of a coach that used a 1-2-1-1 press that they didn’t run very well. Opponents went right through it and got shots. Quick shots. It changed the pace of the game.
9. Don’t let your best player foul at the end of the game: Substitute the Principle’s son in and let him foul. I love that one!

Accountability for Coaches, using rebounding as the example.

First, understand that your players will do what you allow them to do.
So coach, you can't get upset with a player in the game when YOU HAVEN'T made them accountable in practice. Think about it--it just doesn't work that way!

3 Levels of Coaching Rebounding--
1. You talk about it
2. Emphasize it with more of an edge than #1
OR
3. Demand execution in practice followed with accountability. #3 will show up in games while #1 and #2 will keep you up at night!

I've lived both of them--there is no better feeling than seeing the look on a player's face after winning a big game on the road due to the team's practice efforts & habits!

If your goal is to become a head coach at the college level, what consistent and measurable steps are you taking to move closer to your goal each day, week?

Two items that seem to be getting brought up a lot in the coaching world recently are foul related. a. Getting to the line more, while b. Keeping your opponent off the line.
I saw in practices this past year more teaching put into "how not to foul, yet get your job done with a measure of physicalness. Players will hear "don't foul" and go soft, but anything can be more from the truth. Be physical without fouling is the key.
If you shoot 3 more free throws than your average and allow 2 less than your average defensively, you are a +5 and we all know what that means, especially in close games.
